Thursday's with Isaac

Holy Crap,

You are almost 3.

How did that happen?

I do have to say, every age is my favorite age so far.

Ok, the potty training could be going better, but today when I asked you when you will be learning to go on the potty more consistently, you assured me that:

"Actually, mama, I will learn by Thursday."

Though you did not specify which Thursday, there is a glimmer of hope now.

You make us tear our hair out, laugh, and ponder life daily.

You have great comedic timing, incredible empathy, and an amazing quest for knowledge.

You entertain us on your piano, with your stories, and even though you cried every second of our first ice skating expedition, at our usual end of the day recap, you told me how much you loved 'skateboarding on the ice.'

I hope that you appreciate our decision to raise you in the rural Rocky Mountains despite some of the small-minded thinking, one movie theatre with embarrasing film choices, and little pressure to submit to the commercialization of childhood.

Instead you have more time to romp around in the snow, try your hand at tubing, skiing, skating, boating, fishing and hiking, and will no doubt be forced to be very creative, inventive and hearty.

You may have to learn how to cow tip in a few years for entertainment, and you may have to bare the brunt of your friends blaming you for killing JC, and trying to convince you to join Young Life in High School, but you will learn to understand simplicity, connecting to nature, earth and community, and hopefully understand what is really important in life.

I hope that we can teach you all this from where we live.

But if not, and you find yourself in therapy or in trouble later.

Blame your father.
