Sunday, January 25, 2009 at 10:19PM Ok, I will admit it, I am slightly addicted to Facebook. It is very hard for me to admit since my first instinct was that the only folks with profiles were teenage American Idol fans, Gen Xer’s with too much time on their hands trying to make themselves sound more interesting than they are, a few salesmen trying to drum up some business, and single folks with profiles on every dating network site hoping to cast their web wide enough to find Mr. or Mrs. Right.
After receiving an invite from two friends who I consider cool and do not fit any of the bills above, I finally bit the bullet and joined.
After a few days, I came across some old pals from camp that I have not talked to in 18 years, an old roommate I had been trying to reach but could not find, a few old boyfriends –(it was nice to be reassured that there is a divine plan, and not only was I not missing out on anything since our break up, in a few cases, I may have even dodged a bullet.)
I found a friend from my childhood. We used to spend time choreographing dance routines in her TV room. It was great to see that she had followed her dream all the way to Vegas to dance on stage (though I did not ask specifics about where). It prompted me to search for others to see if they had followed their dreams to open a color therapy store, become a musician, teach special needs, travel the world, meet the Dahli Lama, produce and market green products, and redevelop old areas of a destitute part of the city… and most of them had.
I am truly enjoying the trip down memory lane with its “This is Your Life” vibe.
I will admit I had a few senior moments with a few friend invitations, not exactly able to place some folks from my past, but of course, I accepted their invites, who wants to be rude now, right??
This morning as I looked through my ‘friend’s list’ I was feeling pretty cool about my eclectic group of tribesman… 115 friends… Rabbi ‘s, comics, past Reiki clients, musicians, radio show hosts, breeder friends, lawyers, producers, real estate moguls, gypsies, and others who are borderline freaks….
and then it happened...
on a whim I searched for my mother, and found her...
She had been a member of Facebook for a year, had more friends than I, and had not even thought to invite me to join.
Maybe I am not as interesting as I think I am, and maybe my mom and facebook are a little more cool than I thought.
